Guidelines for appropriate music from WSSJA, WIAA, WSDDCA 2006-07; It is the coach’s responsibility to be aware of what is in the music and make sure all lyrics are “classroom appropriate”. If a song wouldn’t be appropriate in a classroom setting it doesn’t belong on the floor at halftime or at a Dance/Drill competition. Coaches should screen all music, not just new music. Many genres over the past decades contain inappropriate terms or words. It is not simply “hip hop”. Any inappropriate words must be completely edited out, not simply disguised by a sound effect. Any inappropriate section must be completely erased and replaced with a sound effect. Inappropriate words in a non-English language are still unacceptable. Profanities in any language are not considered appropriate. Lyrics regarding use of illicit drugs, consumption of alcohol or sexual activities are not allowed. However, lyrics discouraging these activities are considered appropriate. Metaphors for the above mentioned are also not allowed. “Slang terms” shall face the same restrictions as their “original” counterparts. Lyrics simply containing the word “gun” are acceptable. However, any reference to violence with a gun would then make the lyric unacceptable. Innuendo is discouraged. Choreography will be considered if there is any ambiguity. When in doubt take it out. Deductions will be given for inappropriate language, words, or music.
